I am going through addiction withdrawal. The "my only child is now in all-day kindergarten and I miss him so much" addiction withdrawal. It is Day 3 of kindergarten. Lil T LOVES it! He loves the bus ride. He loves the teachers. He loves playing with his friends. Me? Ugh. I miss him. The day seems so long. The day seems so quiet. I have time to do anything I want. So what the heck is wrong with me?!?!? I miss him.
I adjusted to life in the suburbs pretty easily when I first moved from New York to Connecticut, about 7 years ago. Even with no friends and no family around, it was okay. I never really noticed a void. I had a job. Then I became a mom. There was always someone, something to keep me busy. Now. There's a void. After spending a weekend in NY with family and coming back this week to Lil T going to school all day, every day...I'm noticing a void. Sure, I keep myself busy for most of the day, running errands, catching up on housework, enjoying a quiet cup of coffee, or sometimes doing nothing. But that's when I realize...it gets a bit lonely. I was at Tar-jay the other day doing some retail therapy when I noticed all around me were moms shopping with their toddlers or preschoolers in toll. And I thought...that was me. Oh how I miss that. I know, you think I'm crazy. I thought I was crazy too. All the times I've had to shop with Lil T I've thought, it would be so nice to just shop by myself. And it is. For the majority of the time. But that day, I missed my little man and the quirky conversations we always have and get this, when I heard another mom scream at her toddler, "stay in the cart and stop touching everything"...it brought back memories. I'm an idiot, I know.
I'm sure this feeling won't last forever. Like I said, it's addiction withdrawal. A five year addiction of having Lil T with me every single day. It would've been nice to have another child to take care of. That, of course, was my plan. But unfortunately, things don't always work out as you plan. I guess having another child was never written in the stars for me. But that's another story. A story that hopefully one day, I will have the strength to tell.
But for now, I will rely on my bonbons to get me through the day. Eventually I will have to get myself back into the workforce. I'm sure by next week, I'll be back in the full swing of things. But until then...I will enjoy my free time. Because one day in the near future, I will regret ever having complained about having too much time on my hands.
Now if you will excuse me, I have to get ready to get my Beanie off the bus. Fun time has begun!

Keep runnin' and runnin'
I've been bitten by the Fitness bug and it feels G-R-R-R-R-REAT!!! This past weekend, I participated in my very first 5K run.
Have I ran before, you ask? Nope.
Have I been training to run? Nah-uh. Only for 2 weeks prior.
Was I crazy to even attempt this? Probably.
But I did. And I finished. And I wasn't even last. Wooohooooo!

My reason for falling for the "scam"
Okay, I admit it. I'm a Valentine's Day sucker. Oh wait, that didn't sound right. Minds outta the gutter, please. What I mean is that I'm one of those people who falls for the Valentine's Day "scam". You know, the chocolate hysteria and the dozen roses bit. And all things heart-shaped. But please let me explain. I do have a somewhat, if not pathetic, validation for this.
You see, growing up, I was not Ms. Popularity. I grew up with four sisters and parents who wanted a boy. So you can just imagine. I was their "let's get it out of our system and dress her like a boy" therapy. Uh-huh. And once I was out of that phase, I entered the "teenager, acne-faced, let me find my identity" phase. Yup. Prime candidate for therapy. Speaking of which....
Nevermind.
Anyhoo, so you can imagine what it was like when Valentine's Day rolled around. I got valentines in school because the teacher made you give one to everyone. And then when I became a grown adult, there were no boyfriends. Yuh-huh.
So I dreaded Valentine's Day. My biggest memory of Valentine's Day was ordering sushi and watching "Sweet Home Alabama" with a girlfriend, all the while drowning our sorrows in sake. Pathetic. I swore that would all change. Once I had a significant other, that would all change. I would have a reason to celebrate Valentine's Day. I would be one of those crazy people who pushed through aisles of heart-shaped cards and chocolates to pick out the right one. I would one day be the recipient of a bouquet of over-priced, half wilted roses and an expensive box of 1000-calorie chocolates. Man, I couldn't wait!
Yeah, okay. Not so much. Lucky me, I married someone who also doesn't believe in the "Hallmark holiday scam". Although, when we were dating, he did send me a huge bouquet of long-stem roses on Valentine's Day. To my office. With a box of chocolate. Talk about ultimate swooo-oon. Yeah, he suckered me in. He also used to write me poems. Yeah, poems. But that was a loooong time ago.
So finally I thought I had the validation. I now belonged to the flower and chocolate receiving group. But that was short-lived. Now, nada. Okay, he does sometimes still buy me flowers and a box of chocolate on Valentine's Day...but only because he has to. I guess I'll take what I can get. But that's the thing. That's why I fall for this retailer's scam. It's the only day out of the 365 that we have that I can get validation that I am amored. Yeah I know, it's so pathetic that I can puke. People say that there are 364 other days that you can show your love. And it means more when it's not expected or forced (as it is on Valentine's Day). That would be true if you were with someone who showered you with love those other 364 days. But for me, I'll take what I can get. Papa-in-Suburbia is not really Mr. Romantic.
So you see why I'm pro-Valentine's Day. After waiting40 30 plus years to be part of it, I want to celebrate it. Pathetic, I know. But I stand by it.
But lucky for me, I have my very own pint-sized Valentine to celebrate with. He's my love! He's my all! He now gives me a reason to love this holiday even more. And with reason. He's my 365-day Valentine!

Numbers Tell All
Wow, I can't believe it's already mid-January! I'm not sure where the days have gone, but somehow they've managed to sneak by me. It's been a very hectic and busy 2 months. Here's a bit of a recap (by numbers) of the last 2 months:
63: Days since I last blogged. Talk about LAZY!
15: Pounds lost since I started watching my diet a year ago. Goal was 10, but actually lost 15. WOOT..WOOT!!!
11: Dozen cookies baked in one day for Christmas.
2: Dozens of said cookies, I scoffed down myself.
1: Kindle Fire that my wonderful hubby got me for Christmas.
2: Skateboards in the house (Christmas gifts for Papa in Suburbia and Lil T).
1: Knee injury from said skateboard (Papa in Suburbia).
100: Times over the course of 2 months that Lil T has purposely annoyed me by calling me "Mom" instead of "Mommie")

It's NOT just another Hallmark holiday...
Maybe it's me. Maybe I'm just a thoughtful person. Or maybe it's a female "thing". But when it comes to birthdays and anniversaries, I feel that these are special days. And special days need to be celebrated. Right?
Well, yesterday was my birthday. And as much as I hate to celebrate a day that reminds me that I'm another year older (much, much older), it's still a special day to me. And call me selfish and self-centered if you'd like, but I think a birthday needs to be celebrated. Just my opinion.
So here's my 2 cents, for what it's worth. Just some advice for all the boyfriends and husbands out there on celebrating your girlfriend or wife's birthday:
1. Birthdays and anniversaries are not "Hallmark" holidays. These are special occasions and deserve some special attention. They're not like Veteran's Day or Columbus Day (not that those aren't important holidays). And they're not "just another reason for Hallmark to make and sell a card". You need to buy a card. Preferably prior to that special day and not just stopping at CVS on the way to dinner so you can pick one up and scribble a note on it in the bathroom. Plan ahead.
2. Birthdays and anniversaries deserve a gift. No matter what your girlfriend or wife says, you need to get her a gift. Again I repeat, GET A GIFT! If you ask her what she wants, pay attention. Even if she says she doesn't want anything...PAY ATTENTION! GET A GIFT! Notice I didn't say buy a gift. If you're short on cash, you need not spend a lot of money or any money. You can make her something too. Write her a poem. Not a literary genius? Make her a jewelry box. Not a handyman? Give her an "IOU voucher" for a favor or a project that she's been wanting you to do. You get my drift. It's really the thought that counts. I know, it's so cliche. But it's true. The fact that you thought enough of her to buy or make her something special...it means alot.
If you're going to buy her something but don't know what to get, get her a gift card. Some people think gift cards are thoughtless. They're not. Get her a gift card to her favorite store (hopefully you have some clue as to where that would be). At least she can use it to buy something she likes. Don't ever say, "I didn't get you anything because you said not to." She was being nice when she said that, idiot! And don't ever say, "You always return everything I get you, so I didn't get you anything." Big mistake! That's why you buy a gift card...
3. Flowers are nice. Unless she's allergic to them. But if not, buy her a nice bouquet. Short on cash? A single rose will do. This will definitely earn you some bonus points.
4. Don't forget about the kids. If you have kids, get her something from them too. Go pick out a card with them or have them make a card. It really means alot. She'll treasure it. I know I would.
5. Make dinner plans. Either cook her a special dinner or make reservations. She should not have to cook today. To earn bonus points...make her breakfast. In bed is preferable, but not a must.
6. Get a cake. We love dessert. Don't collapse it with candles that remind her of her age. One or two is enough. Who doesn't love blowing out candles?
And there you have it. Not too hard, right? It's totally doable. Seriously, it doesn't matter how much she says she doesn't want to celebrate. She does. Who doesn't want to be treated extra special once in a while. Trust me, just do it. It'll make her happier... and your life easier in the long run.

She's a mom gone Diva.
So last night while flipping TV channels, I came across the show Kate Plus 8 on TLC. It's been a while since I've followed the whole Gosselin drama. Yes, I admit it. I was an avid follower of Jon & Kate Plus 8 back in the day. The wonder of watching this couple raise a set of twins and sextuplets was very entertaining, to say the least. And since the airing of the first couple of seasons was about the time when I was dealing with being a new mom and going through postpartum depression, watching the show actually helped me alot. Watching Kate deal with her day-to-day adventures with her 8 kids made me feel thankful I only had to deal with one. Yea, I know...I'm a loser with a capital "L".
Anyways, back to Kate. So watching an episode last night, I was amazed at how diva-fied Kate has become. Let me tell you, she is no longer the frumpy, tired-looking mom she once was. She is now Ms. Diva with a capital "D". And I don't mean that as a compliment. Sure, she looks good. But it just goes to show you what fame and fortune can do to a person. Yes, she's still as controlling and slightly obnoxious as she was before (maybe a tad bit more now) but now she's got the overly made up looks to go with it. Her hair is blonder, straighter, longer and more stylish than before. Her face is always made up. Her nails are always done. She's wearing more cleavage-revealing clothes and shorter, tighter skirts. And don't get me started on her cleavage. Either she's gotten her hands on some really good padded uplifting bras or someone has paid a visit to a plastic surgeon. She's definitely lost some weight. She's more toned and she's into running and working out. Now from experience, I know that when you lose weight, one of the first body parts to lose that weight is usually your boobs. Sure you can tone your chest, but for your boobs to look fuller and bigger....hello? Boob job. Just my opinion. And get this. She was rocking stilettos on an outing with her twins. Stilettos? Really?
Yeah okay, deep down I'm a bit jealous. I wanna get diva-fied too. Well maybe just look like one and not act like one...haha.
I guess fame and fortune does change a person. I just find it sad that she's using her kids to popularize herself. And to say that she needs to continue doing the show and the public appearances and the book deals because she needs the money to support these kids...that's really sad. The twins are now 11 and the sextuplets are now 7. And you can see from the show, they've grown to be kinda bratty. I guess it's what you would come to expect. I just feel for those kids. Let's hope they don't appear in one of those future "Child Stars Gone Bad" shows.
So yea, it was quite a shock for me to see the new Kate last night. And yes, I was ranting and raving all night about how much she's changed. And just watching her divalicious self was more entertaining than the storyline itself. But I gotta say...kudos to her. Let's just hope for her and her kids sake, it's worth it.
